Skylar

Meet Skylar R.

Graduated 2019

“I loved the close-knit community the most because it gave me so many opportunities that I do not think I would have received at a bigger campus.”

Where is Skylar now?

Skylar is completing her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Western University.

Placement

“My favourite course was the Applied Study in Psychology (placement) course. One of the things I liked about UofGH was the opportunity to gain 100 hours of workplace experience in the field. I completed mine at a private practice as an Intake Associate and gained a number of valuable skills related to counselling and the intake process. Those skills not only helped me with pursuing my graduate studies, but I still have that connection with the practice today.”

Research

“In my thesis course, we were able to not only learn how to conduct our own research project, but were able to actually complete the process from creating the research proposal, to carrying out the plan, and collecting your own data and analyzing it.”

Skylar expanded her experience doing research by becoming a paid Research Assistant in her fourth year. She worked with Dr. Adam Sandford looking at the recognition of familiar faces that were contrast negated and stretched. The research was published as “Recognition of deformed familiar faces: Contrast negation and non-global stretching.”

You may see photos of Dr. Sandford and Skylar demonstrating their research methods in some UofGH publications or on our website.

“I presented at the Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science 2019 Conference for the work I did as a Research Assistant at UofGH.”

“I think the best example of how I experienced UofGH’s close-knit community was working on campus. Not only did I get to know the professors better, in the Psychology program and across other programs as well, but I was able to meet so many students across all programs that I am still friends with today. Being able to meet so many different people on campus led to other great opportunities and connections, that I still utilize in my professional experiences.”

Scholarships/Awards

“I loved the focused program because it allowed me to learn about all of the different areas of psychology, which helped narrow down my interests and decide which path I wanted to pursue in my graduate studies”
