Here at Guelph-Humber, my eyes opened up to other opportunities that are out there."
Since joining the University of Guelph-Humber’s Justice Studies program as a transfer applicant, Kevin Chagger’s career prospects have turned promising.
Chagger enrolled in a Police Foundations course at a local college after high school and earned a diploma. An internship with the Ontario Provincial Police rekindled his dream of working with other law-enforcement organizations. He realized a degree from a reputable school would go a long way in opening those doors.
So, he applied to UofGH and got a full year’s worth of credit for his previous academic qualifications. As a full-time student, Chagger has benefited from a blend of theoretical as well as applied learning opportunities, including an internship with the City of Brampton, arranged with help from Placement Services.
“Here at Guelph-Humber, my eyes opened up to other opportunities that are out there,” said Chagger, a second-year student at UofGH. “I think anyone that’s interested in Justice Studies or a related field should definitely stop by UofGH and speak to one of the faculty members because you’re not just a number here.
“The class sizes are relatively small and if you build up a rapport with your professor, you will definitely make connections that will help you.”
On Thursday, March 22, Admission Services will be hosting Admit Me! on UofGH campus. Participants can meet with an Admissions Coordinator to discuss their personal application, admissions requirements, and potential transfer credit as a student at UofGH. Attendees are encouraged to bring their official transcripts and any supporting documentation for on-the-spot admission advising and assessment.
In two years, Chagger will graduate from UofGH with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Justice Studies and a diploma in Community and Justice Services. He’s confident the degree, along with the work placements he will have completed by then, will help him land that coveted job.
“The placement component of the program is absolutely great,” said Chagger. “I couldn’t find any other university that offered placement services for the students and I am deeply appreciative of that.”
