Love Means...

Guelph-Humber building

Love Means… is a unique photography exhibit that celebrates Canadian Down Syndrome week. Hosted by Humber alumna, Jessica Rotolo, and 4th year University of Guelph-Humber psychology student, Lauren Abela and in partnership with Student Life, the exhibit aims to dispel misconceptions and a lack of understanding about the lives of people with Down Syndrome. Photographer Hilary Gauld and videographer Scott Drucker, took a series of portraits to show the many ways that love exists for people with Down Syndrome: romantic, platonic, same-sex, and between people with Down Syndrome and others.

“The individuals in the photo series show what love represents to them: respect, happiness, trust, warm hugs, and intimacy. The goal of the project is that these stories and visuals inspire, educate and create space for greater visibility of the experiences adults have with Down syndrome navigate, including love,” said Gauld.

The project was funded by the University of Guelph’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee and was awarded $7,000 as a part of their EDI Enhancement Fund project.
