Dr. Agnes Coutinho has been appointed Assistant Program Head of the University of Guelph-Humber’s Kinesiology program.
Dr. Coutinho brings to the role experience in Kinesiology, as well as research and teaching in exercise physiology, endocrinology, immunology and health promotion, . Her degrees span from a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology to a Doctorate in Medical Science. After completing her PhD in Scotland, Dr. Coutinho held a four-year Post-doctoral Fellowship funded by the Medical Research Council in the UK, studying the effect of stress hormone regulation on the immune system. Since returning to Canada from overseas in 2013, Dr. Coutinho has been teaching at Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber.
“I am very excited to work with Dr. Coutinho,” says Dr. Leslie Stefanyk, Program Head, Kinesiology. “Her strong track record in teaching and research as well as her passion for health make her exceptionally well-suited for this role.”
Dr. Coutinho also has experience working on health promotion initiatives in the non-profit and private sectors. She serves on the Board of Directors of the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association, the Director of Health Communication for Urban Poling Inc.,
“After pursuing a few different research paths, I’ve come full circle back to Kinesiology,” says Dr. Coutinho. “Kinesiology is my passion, and I’m looking forward to working in the program here at the University of Guelph-Humber.”
Dr. Coutinho completed her Bachelor degree in Kinesiology and Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and Metabolism from York University, and holds a PhD in Medical Sciences (specializing in Endocrinology) from the College of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
