A mogul in the making

Guelph-Humber building

It didn’t take long for Rakhee Kakkar to decide she wanted to be at the University of Guelph-Humber. When she first came to campus, she made up her mind in minutes.

“As soon as I walked into the building on Program Preview Day, I could feel the camaraderie here,” she says. Miss Kakkar started talking with an Admissions staff member about the University’s business program and before she knew it, she was convinced.

“I loved UofGH’s friendliness — that atmosphere I felt made we want to come here rather than going anywhere else.”

With her strong academic average and a long list of volunteer and leadership experience, Miss Kakkar also qualified to be a recipient of one of UofGH’s Founder Scholarships, a renewable $5,000 award to help cover living expenses and tuition fees. She also qualified for a Renewable Entrance Scholarship and Specialist High Skills Major Scholarship, two of the many awards and bursaries available to UofGH students.

“I’m excited and happy to be a recipient,” she says. “Having these scholarships motivates me to work hard and maintain my grade point average.”

Now nearly finished her first semester in UofGH’s Business program, Miss Kakkar has her eyes set on the future. With dreams of becoming a fashion mogul with her own clothing line and cosmetics brand, she’s doing her best to soak up all the information she can from her classes.

“I have a passion for business, so I’m really into everything I’m learning,” she says. “What I’m really looking forward to though is my job placement— I can’t wait for that real-life experience. I think it’ll make me that much more successful when I start my career.”

Equally happy about Rakhee’s time at the University is her mother, Anjna Kakkar. She too was impressed with what she saw on their visit to campus.

“The personal approach the staff and faculty have with the students here really sold me. They’re friendly, always willing to help, and they encourage the students to ask questions,” she says. “From a parent’s point of view, it made me feel really confident. I know that if there’s an issue, she’s going to be fine.”

While Rakhee has her eyes set on conquering the fashion world, in the meantime, she’s happy to be learning and studying each day.

“Right now, I want to get my degree and diploma and build my business knowledge. So far, I’m really enjoying my time here. It’s been good, so I just want to continue on.”

She knows that when it’s time to trade her textbooks in for textiles, she’ll be ready.
