Awards and Bursaries for In-Course Students
The University of Guelph-Humber has an extremely generous scholarship and award program that recognizes academic achievement, student leadership and extracurricular activities.
Recipients are acknowledged for achievements and the awards are designed to encourage further study and accomplishment. This means that students must be registered at a full-time level to receive an award, unless otherwise specified.

Ontario Government Awards:
Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship - Application Deadline January 10, 2025
The Government of Ontario established this scholarship to support students attending Ontario’s publicly assisted colleges and universities who have been impacted by conflicts around the globe. The University of Guelph and the University of Guelph-Humber will award four, $10,000 scholarships.
These scholarships will be awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence and financial need. The application is open to domestic and international students who are studying on a part-time or full-time basis.

Fall Semester Awards:
Diversity Bursary
Five awards of $1,500 for Black, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Metis), and/or racialized students in any full-time program who have demonstrated financial need. Students must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person.

Justin Eves Scholarship
In memory of Justin Eves who was a person with dyslexia and died tragically in an automobile accident in 1995. The Justin Eves Foundation together with the University of Guelph provides these awards to undergraduate students who are people with learning disabilities. Selection will be based on academic achievement and demonstrated leadership through volunteer and/or extracurricular activities. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need and a diagnosis of “Dyslexia” or “Dyslexic characteristics”.
Students are required to provide a letter from the Accessible Learning Services advisor confirming a learning disability, and if applicable, a Dyslexia diagnosis and a personal statement outlining leadership abilities as demonstrated through volunteer and/or extracurricular activities.

Samsonshield Foundation Justice Studies Bursary
Established by The Samsonshield Foundation, in recognition of their commitment to education, this award of $2,000 recognizes a student in the BASc. Justice Studies program with demonstrated financial need who has completed a minimum of 4.5 credits and no more than 12.0 credits. Apply to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by October 7 with a Financial Need Assessment Form. This award may only be held once.
University of Guelph-Humber Indigenous Student Bursary
Established in 2017, this bursary provides direct support to an Indigenous student with demonstrated financial need to assist with financing their education. One award of $2,000 is awarded to the student with high-demonstrated financial need.

Media Community Merit Scholarship
Established in 2016, this award recognizes a Media Studies student who demonstrates financial need. The student must have completed 5.00 or more credits in their program. The student must have a minimum 80% cumulative average and demonstrate their community involvement at the University of Guelph-Humber. Students must submit a one-page letter describing their involvement in the Guelph-Humber community.

Psychology Community Merit Scholarship
Established in 2016, this award recognizes a Psychology student who demonstrates financial need. The student must have completed 5.00 or more credits in their program. The student must have a minimum 80% cumulative average and demonstrate their community involvement at the University of Guelph-Humber. Students must submit a one-page letter describing their involvement in the Guelph-Humber community.

IGNITE Student Scholarship for Community Involvement
Established in 2012 by IGNITE to mark the ten-year anniversary of the establishment of the University of Guelph-Humber, this award recognizes the contributions of an in-course student (minimum of 8.00 credits completed) who has dedicated time to the enrichment of the University of Guelph-Humber and/or the wider community through their extracurricular involvement. The recipient of this award must be in good academic standing (60% or better). Students must submit a resume and one letter of support attesting to their contributions to community enrichment.

IGNITE Scholarship – Early Childhood Studies Degree Completion
Established in 2012 by IGNITE to mark the ten-year anniversary of the establishment of the University of Guelph-Humber, this award recognizes the contributions of an in-course student in the Early Childhood Studies Degree Completion program (minimum of 2.00 credits completed) who demonstrates a commitment to enriching their workplace experience with the knowledge they have gained in the classroom. The recipient of this award must be in good academic standing (60% or better). Students must submit a one page letter explaining how their education has impacted and enriched their workplace experience.

The Guss-Credit Union Bursary
This award of $2,000 is presented in honour of Jonathan Guss, retired CEO of the Credit Union Central of Ontario, by his colleagues, co-workers and affiliated credit unions across Canada. The award supports students with great financial need in their pursuit of an undergraduate education in any of Guelph-Humber’s academic programs.

The J.P. Bickell Foundation Award
This award of $850 has been made available through a generous grant from the J.P Bickell Foundation. The award supports a student with great financial need in any of the University of Guelph-Humber’s social service programs (Community Social Services, Early Childhood Studies, or Justice Studies). Students must submit a one-page description of volunteer work and a letter of reference from someone who can attest to the candidate’s commitment to volunteerism.

The Phillip Santangelo Memorial Bursary
Created in memory of Phillip Santangelo, a member of the second graduating class (2008) at the University of Guelph-Humber, and with the aid of the Ontario government's OTSS program, several bursaries of up to $1,500 are available to students who have completed a minimum of 4.00 credits in the Business Program (BBA) at the University of Guelph-Humber. If there are no suitable applicants in the Business Program, the bursary will be made available to a student who completed a minimum of 4.00 credits in any University of Guelph-Humber program. Selection will be based on demonstrated financial need.

WeirFoulds Bursary
Created by the lawyers of WeirFoulds, with the aid of the Ontario government OTSS program, this $1,000 bursary is available to students registered at the University of Guelph Humber who have completed a minimum of 4.00 credits. Preference will be given to students in the Justice Studies program. If there are no suitable applicants in the Justice Studies program the bursary will be made available to any student from any program. Selection will be based on demonstrated financial need.

First Class Scholarship
Established by the first graduating class of the University of Guelph-Humber in 2006, this scholarship of $600 is awarded to the student who demonstrates financial need and is actively involved in the campus community. Students registered in any University of Guelph-Humber degree program with a minimum of 2.50 completed credits are eligible. Students must submit a resume outlining extracurricular activities.

Ontario Indigenous Student Bursary
The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development has established the Indigenous Student Bursary as part of their 2009 Aboriginal post-secondary education funding initiative. These bursaries provide direct support to Aboriginal Students with demonstrated financial need to assist with financing their education.Apply to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by October 7 by completing the Ontario Indigenous Student Bursary application and the applicable Financial Need Assessment Form.

This bursary is provided to students on the basis of financial need only.

First Generation Bursary
The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has established the Ontario First Generation Student Bursary as part of their Access to Opportunities Strategy. These bursaries provide direct support to students with demonstrated financial need who are first in their families to attend university or college. A first generation student is an individual whose parents have not attended full- or part-time post-secondary studies, in or outside Canada, at any time or in any program. You are still considered to be a first generation student if your siblings have attended post-secondary studies.
To be eligible for this bursary you must be a first generation student (as defined above), a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or a Protected Person, an Ontario resident as defined by OSAP, registered in at least 1.5 credits at the University of Guelph-Humber, and in a state of demonstrated financial need.

John Holland Excellence in Justice Studies Scholarship
This certificate of Honour and $1,000 prize was established in 2006 and is presented to the nominated student who has made the most significant contribution to the University of Guelph-Humber community, beyond their own program of study and has a commitment to enriching the student experience at the University. Enrichment includes, but is not limited to, encouraging increased student involvement in campus life and learning, a commitment to strengthening the sense of community with-in the University of Guelph-Humber and Humber, demonstrating innovation in academic or student life, encouraging student and faculty interaction, and advocating on behalf of the needs, aspirations and interests of all University of Guelph-Humber students.
Nominations can be submitted to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by October 7. A fellow student, member of faculty or staff member can complete and submit the nomination package.
The Guelph-Humber Student Association and Alumni Bursary
This award of $950 is presented on behalf of the University of Guelph-Humber Student Association and the University of Guelph-Humber alumni. The award supports students with great financial need in their pursuit of an undergraduate education in any of the University of Guelph-Humber’s academic programs.

Caregiver Bursary
1 award of $1,000 for a student registered in any program offered by the University of Guelph-Humber who have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students who act as caregivers; a person who gives care to people who need help taking care of themselves. Examples of acting as a caregiver include but are not limited to caring for a family member or someone in their community; their own children, sibling(s), parent(s), grandparent(s), neighbour, or any dependent individual who possesses a cognitive and/or physical disability. Apply by October 7 with a completed Financial Need Assessment Form and, if applicable, include a one-page letter outlining caregiving roles/responsibilities to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee. Selection will be based on financial need. This award can only be held once.

Merit Scholarship for Part Time Programs
Multiple awards of $750 for students registered in any part-time program offered by the University of Guelph-Humber who have completed the required number of credits for their program with a minimum 80% cumulative average.
Selection will be based on the top 5 cumulative averages in each program. No application required. This award can only be held once.
Required credits:
Early Childhood Studies part-time program (minimum 14 credits and maximum 17 credits)
Community Social Services part-time program (minimum 14 credits and maximum 17 credits)
Justice and Public Safety part-time program (minimum 10 credits and maximum 12.5 credits)
Guelph-Humber Study Tour Travel Grant
Multiple awards of $2,500 for students registered in AHSS*3500 International Field Study in the summer semester with a minimum 70% cumulative average. Apply by using the UGH Study Abroad Application. Applicants will be asked to indicate reasons for travel, the relevance of participating in the travel opportunity to their academic studies, and the benefits of participating in the travel opportunity. The awards will be selected but not granted until the Study Tour participation. Selection will be based on academic achievement, demonstrated relevance of the travel to the student's academic studies, and benefit to the applicant. Students must attend the study tour portion of AHSS*3500 International Field Study.
University of Guelph-Humber Parent Bursary
1 award of $1,500 for a student registered in any program offered by the University of Guelph-Humber who have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students who are parents: supporting a dependent child or children while completing their program. ("Dependent child" includes the child of the student, less than 26 years of age, and dependent on support on such student. The following will also be considered children of the student: persons the student is adopting, stepchildren of the student; and persons related to the student by blood or marriage whom the student is the legal guardian. The restriction of 25 years does not apply to physically or mentally disabled children over 25 years of age who had this condition and were a dependent of the student before the age of 26). This award can only be held once.

Winter Semester Scholarships:
Nadia Singh Ghanny Scholarship
Established by faculty member Nadia Ghanny this award of $1,000 recognizes a student registered in the Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) program majoring in Justice Studies or the Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) program Justice and Public Safety specialization offered by the University of Guelph-Humber who has completed at least 10 credits with a minimum 75% cumulative average. Apply by February 15, to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards committee with a one-page letter outlining the commitment to your personal educational journey and work experiences that have led you to the University of Guelph-Humber and, if applicable, include details of pursuing post-secondary education after gaining experience in the workplace. Selection will be based on a high cumulative average and the detailed letter that outlines your educational journey and work experiences that have led you to the University of Guelph-Humber Justice Studies / Justice and Public Safety programs. Preference will be given to students who pursued post-secondary education after gaining experience in the workplace. The scholarship can only be held once.

Lullaboo ECE Scholarship
Established by Lullaboo Nursery and Childcare Center in recognition of their commitment to the field of ECE in the ages 0-4, this award recognizes Early Childhood Studies students who share in their passion. Two awards of $2,500 are awarded to students registered full time in the Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Early Childhood Studies (ECS) who have completed ECS*2050 Curriculum Development I in the previous fall semester and who have demonstrated a passion for and commitment to working with children ages 0-4. Apply by February 15 to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee with a letter demonstrating passion and commitment to working with children ages 0-4.

CSS Scholarship for Excellence in Online Learning
Established in 2019, this award recognizes a student registered in the Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Community Social Services part-time program. One award of $1,000 is awarded to the student who achieves the highest cumulative GPA and has completed a minimum of 18.5 credit by the end of the fall semester. Recipients will be notified in the winter semester.

One Award of $1,000 for a Black, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Metis), and/or racialized student in any full-time program with the highest cumulative GPA. Student must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person. Preference will be given for a student who has not previously received the award.

Diversity and Community Engagement Scholarship
One Award of $1,500 for a Black, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Metis), and/or racialized student who has completed between 5.0 and 15.0 credits in any full-time program. Student must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person. This award is based on the extent and impact of engagement in the community and/or at the University of Guelph-Humber. Preference will be given for a student who has not previously received the award.
Apply to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by February 15 with a brief letter detailing the extent and impact of engagement in the community and/or at the University of Guelph-Humber and self-identifying as a Black, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) or racialized student.

University of Guelph-Humber Student Services Scholarship
Established in 2020, by employees of the University of Guelph-Humber Student Services department to recognize a University of Guelph-Humber student who is an employee on campus during the current academic year, has achieved a minimum cumulative average of 75% and who has taken initiative beyond the scope of their role. One award of $1,000 is awarded to the student who provided the greatest contribution to their role which includes but is not limited to: taking initiative beyond the scope of the role; demonstrating leadership in a team setting; enhancing the department’s program or service.
Nominations can be submitted to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by February 15. A fellow coworker or supervisor can complete and submit the nomination package including a letter of reference attesting to the student’s contributions and its impacts. The award may only be held once.

Dr. Evelyn Bird Prize
The Evelyn Bird Prize was established in 2017 by Dr. Evelyn Bird who taught at the University of Guelph. Students registered in the Kinesiology program at the University of Guelph-Humber with a minimum cumulative average of 77% and who have completed KIN*3190’s field placement in a high school in the preceding fall term are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students who play on a woman’s varsity team. In addition, students already accepted into teacher’s training college will be given first consideration.

University of Guelph-Humber Early Childhood Studies Online Scholarship
Established in 2017, this award recognizes a student registered in the Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Early Childhood Studies part-time program. One award of $1,000 is awarded to the student who achieves the highest final grade in ECS*4040 - Program Development, Administration, and Evaluation online course.

Established in 2016, this award recognizes a student registered in the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration program. One award of $1,000 is awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark in BADM*3500 - Business Practicum in the current academic year.

Established in 2016, this award recognizes a student registered in the Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Community Social Services program. One award of $1,000 awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark in CSS*3120 - Intermediate Practicum I.

Established in 2017, this award recognizes a student registered in the Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology program. One award of $1,000 is awarded to the student who achieves the highest final grade in PSYC*3180 - Applied Study in Psychology: Community Mental Health.

Established in 2016, this award recognizes a student registered in the Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology program. One award of $1,000 is awarded to the student who achieves the highest final grade in completed PSYC*3120 - Quantification in Psychology II.

One award of $1000 will be presented to a student registered in the Bachelor of Business Administration program who has completed a minimum of 10.00 credits, including BADM*1030, BADM*1060, BADM*2010 and BADM*3120, and with the highest cumulative average.

Established in 2016, this award recognizes a student registered in the Honours Bachelor of Applied Arts in Media Studies program. One award of $1,000 is awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark in MDST*4210 - Media Practices II.

CSEP/SCPE Scholarship in Applied Exercise Physiology
Established in 2014 by the Department of Kinesiology, this scholarship recognizes a student registered in the Kinesiology major of the B.A.Sc. program. The scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to the student with the highest cumulative average in KIN*3010 - Exercise Physiology, KIN*3110 - Advanced Fitness Assessment, and KIN*3200 - Performance Related Exercise.

Gold Medallion for Academic Excellence in Kinesiology
Established in 2014 by the Department of Kinesiology, this award recognizes the student with highest cumulative average in the core courses in the Kinesiology major of the B.A.Sc. program. One award of $1000 and a commemorative medal will be awarded to the student with the highest cumulative average in KIN*1040 - Human Anatomy II, SCMA*1120 - Cell Biology, KIN*2060 - Human Physiology II, SCMA*3100 - Biomechanics, KIN*3020 - Injuries and Exercise Contraindications, KIN*4050 - Special Populations: Understanding Disease, and KIN*4030 - Motor Learning and Neural Control.

Virginia Gray Academic Medal
This medal is awarded to the student in the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Justice and Public Safety with the highest cumulative GPA following the completion of their seventh semester level. The award is named for the late Virginia Gray, Director of Office of Opening Learning at the University of Guelph, and recognizes outstanding academic achievement. All eligible BAA students will be considered after final grades are recorded from the fall semester. Recipients will be notified in the winter semester.

University of Guelph-Humber Student Leadership Scholarships
These $1500 scholarships recognize outstanding student leadership contributions. They are awarded to students who have completed a minimum of two full-time semesters (minimum credit total of 4.0), have achieved a minimum cumulative average of 75% and who have made outstanding leadership contributions to the University of Guelph-Humber, the larger campus environment or their community. Leadership may be demonstrated through involvement in activities such as student government, athletics, volunteer experiences and work in organizations outside of the campus. Leadership involvement will be the deciding factor in awarding scholarships. The award may be held only once.

University of Guelph-Humber Scholarship in Nutrition and Metabolism
Established in 2014 by the Department of Kinesiology, this scholarship recognizes a student in the Kinesiology major of the B.A.Sc. program who has achieved both academic and professional excellence in the field of Nutrition and Metabolism. One scholarship of $1000 is awarded to the student with the highest cumulative average in SCMA*1080 - Introduction to Chemistry/KIN*1070 - Biochemistry and Metabolism I, KIN*2070 - Biochemistry and Metabolism, and KIN*3030 - Nutrition: Exercise and Metabolism.
This is an automatic scholarship. No application is required.
Kinesiology Scholarship in Undergraduate Research Excellence
Established in 2014 by the Department of Kinesiology, this scholarship recognizes a Kinesiology student registered in KIN*4300 Kinesiology Thesis I. One award of $1000 is awarded to the student who submits the highest quality research proposal. The proposal will describe their novel primary research project and demonstrate their research writing skills.

Community Social Services Spirit of Volunteerism Scholarship
Established in 2013 by the Human Services Department, this $1,000 scholarship recognizes the student in the Community Social Services major of the B.A. Sc. program who has been deemed to have made the greatest contribution to extracurricular volunteerism above and beyond the program requirements.
Apply to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by February 15 with a one page statement demonstrating commitment to volunteerism and one letter of recommendation from a member of the public who can attest to volunteer activities.
Outstanding Achievement in Early Childhood Studies Placement Scholarship
Established in 2013, this $1,000 scholarship recognizes students in the Early Childhood Studies major of the B.A.Sc. program, who have demonstrated outstanding achievement at their field placement. Students must have completed ECS*2040 or subsequent field placements and have been nominated by a University of Guelph-Humber field placement course instructor/site supervisor. Students must be registered full-time in their program of study.
Nominations can be submitted to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by February 15. A University of Guelph-Humber Field Placement Course Instructor or Site Supervisor can complete and submit the nomination package including a one page letter of recommendation attesting to the student’s outstanding placement activities.

Dr. Glenn Hanna Phi Epsilon Scholarship
1 award of $1,000 for students registered full-time in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Justice Studies at the University of Guelph-Humber who are members of the Phi Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma Honours Society. Selection will be based on the most significant contribution to the Phi Epsilon Chapter of the Alpha Phi Sigma Honours Society during the previous or current academic year, which includes but is not limited to; demonstrating leadership, increasing member involvement, and fostering a sense of community within the society. Apply by February 15 to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee with a one-page letter demonstrating contributions to the Phi Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma Honours Society in the previous or current academic year. Preference will be given to a student who has not previously received this scholarship.

CCUPEKA Student Leadership Award
This is an external award for UofGH kinesiology students. Established in 2024 with the Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators (CCUPEKA), this award recognizes a graduating Kinesiology student who has demonstrated leadership, academic success, and commitment to the field of kinesiology. The successful candidate of the CCUPEKA Student Leadership Award will be recognized by the council among recipients across Canada studying kinesiology or physical education at member institutions.
Eligible applicants will be in good academic standing and have a minimum 80% cumulative grade point average. Applicants will submit 1) a one-page description of contributions to the profession through leadership roles during their undergraduate studies along with; 2) a letter of support from an individual of their choosing who can substantiate their contribution(s).

Summer Semester Awards:
Professional Staff Association Scholarship
This scholarship of $1,500 is provided to the student with the highest cumulative average. Full-time students who are from the immediate family, part-time or contractual Professional/Managerial Group employees of the University of Guelph, and/or retired Professional/Managerial Group of the University of Guelph who have completed at least 5.00 credits and have a minimum 70% cumulative average are eligible to apply. This award may be held more than once, however, not in consecutive years. Preference will be given to students of current or retired P.S.A. members. This scholarship is awarded in the fall semester.

Michael Nightingale Community Enrichment Award
This annual award has been established to honour Michael Nightingale, who served as the first Vice-Provost and Chief Academic Officer at the University of Guelph-Humber from 2001 to 2005. Throughout his tenure, Michael’s vision and dedication were critical in shaping both the academic and co-curricular environments at the University of Guelph-Humber.
This award is presented to a graduating student who has made significant contributions to the University of Guelph-Humber community, beyond their own program of study, and shares Michael Nightingale’s commitment to enriching the student experience at the University. The award consists of a certificate of honour, a permanent plaque displayed in the University of Guelph-Humber building, and a cash prize of $1,000. The successful candidate will be invited to and recognized at the annual Last Lecture.
Nominations can be submitted to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by February 15. Nominations must be submitted by a fellow student, member of faculty or staff member.

University of Guelph-Humber Gold Medallion for Leadership Excellence
The University of Guelph-Humber provides students with a unique experience which joins rigorous academic curriculum with practical real world experience both inside and outside the classroom. The University of Guelph-Humber Gold Medallion for Leadership Excellence recognizes students who have completed 17.50 or more credits and who have made leadership contributions to their program, outside of the classroom and/or in the community. One graduating student in each University of Guelph-Humber program of study will receive a leadership medal and a $500 award.
Apply to the University of Guelph-Humber Awards Committee by February 15 with an outline of contributions made to the program and two letters of support.
CPA Graduation Prize
One award of $1,000 will be presented to the student graduating from the winter or previous fall semester from the Bachelor of Business Administration program with the highest cumulative average and who has completed BADM*3130, BADM*4220, BADM*4210 and BADM*4230.
