Interested in an extracurricular experience that connects directly to your academic program? Consider joining one of the University of Guelph-Humber’s societies!
This month, we are profiling the Guelph-Humber Advertising & Marketing Association (GHAMA). GHAMA assists students who are seeking to develop their professional careers within the fields of advertising and marketing, through the implementation of creative advertising, marketing and networking experiences.
GHAMA’s staff advisor, Student Life Coordinator Shannon Ho, shared that societies are offering their activities and events virtually this semester and are continuing to engage with students and the Guelph-Humber community.
In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this month, GHAMA has been running its annual GH-Goes-Pink initiative. Ramein Ayaz, GHAMA’s Vice President of Internal Affairs, explains why students should consider getting involved with GHAMA.

What made you decide to get involved with the Guelph-Humber Advertising & Marketing Association originally?
I decided to get involved with GHAMA because it raises awareness on important matters such as breast cancer, Black history, etc. I feel that this reflects my personal values as I am always willing to learn about and advocate for humanitarian issues. GHAMA is also very interactive with such a diverse group of students. It allows students to step out of their comfort zone, learn, network, make new friends, and most importantly have fun. I joined GHAMA because it brings the students together and provides a safe and fun community.
What do you think students will take away from getting involved with GHAMA?
I believe there’s a lot for students to take away from GHAMA. They are able to educate themselves on significant matters such as breast cancer through the GH-Goes-Pink event. Other events include resume-making workshops, creative software workshops that help students navigate platforms such as Canva, panel events with guest speakers/alumni, and much more. These workshops often allow students to learn new things and to network. Students are also always rewarded for participating in and supporting events hosted by GHAMA. For instance, they are able to participate in creative competitions such as creating 60-second advertisement videos to win a gift card of their choice, or mini-contests through Instagram to win Guelph-Humber merchandise. It keeps them coming back and looking forward to new events
What inspired the GH-Goes-Pink initiative?
GH-Goes-Pink is an initiative that has been around for quite some time. Although GHAMA is always willing to bring forth initiatives for things like Black history and mental health, etc, breast cancer awareness has always been the one consistent event over the years.
Cancer is a very personal topic to many and impacts everyone – whether they’ve experienced it personally or know of someone who has had or has lost someone to the disease. It is held during October which is mid-semester.
This year, GHAMA is hosting an online event the week of October 25 on GHAMA’s Instagram page which will have facts, statistics, and other important information about breast cancer. There will also be a Q&A aspect on GHAMA’s Instagram story which will consist of questions relative to the facts post. This is an educational and interactive online event, as it allows students to learn about breast cancer and put that knowledge to use!
Students can engage on GHAMA’s Instagram page for a change to win 1 of 5 GH Goes Pink branded snack boxes.
