The society’s revival gives fresh opportunities to students to learn about working, living, conducting business outside of Canada
A pair of students are breathing new life into the Global Business Society at the University of Guelph-Humber (U of GH), which is now active for the first time since 2017.
There’s an abundance of opportunities to work and conduct business outside of Canada, and the student-run Global Business Society wants to inform the U of GH student body about how to explore or pursue these avenues.
Currently, the executive team is comprised of two members, President and Justice Studies student Louis Gallego-Hammadieh and Vice-President and Business student Akosua Badu, but the society welcomes students of all programs and years of study to join.
“I want this society to be a platform that offers students the opportunity to gain valuable international business knowledge, build a community of shared interests, and promote growth. I want this society to inspire and engage our peers in meaningful and impactful ways,” Badu said.
Global business encapsulates a wide breadth of areas from stock trading, to venture capitalism (securing start-up funding for a company), to interacting with companies outside of Canada. The society also examines global business through the lens of Canadian professionals immigrating abroad for work, including the visas and paperwork required for the move. The events hosted by the society will focus on these key areas.
For example, the society has plans to host an International Business Careers Workshop that will teach attendees about applying for U.S. visas if they have interest in working and living in the United States.
“People have a right to know the context of everything they want to do,” Gallego-Hammadieh said, who has ambitions of becoming a lawyer. “We’re trying to inform people about business as a whole, not just within just one sector and not just within just a business program.”
As a pre-law student, the intersections of policy, legal frameworks, and business fascinate him, so his approach to global business might be different from a student in the Business program or any other program at U of GH. Gallego-Hammadieh explained within law, there’s overlap with business from corporate law to finance law to tech law and more. He feels reviving this society will not only help him gain a deeper legal understanding ahead of his desired pathway to law school but also help other students at U of GH learn outside the classroom.
“[I want students to know] you can interact on a global stage. You’re not just stuck in Canada,” Gallego-Hammadieh said.
Students can engage with the Global Business Society by subscribing to the email newsletter, following them on social media, or attending their workshops, with no pressure to commit.
