Since graduating from the University of Guelph-Humber, Robin Ghosh’s young career in the media has been all about variety.
The graduate of the Media Studies program has shot footage on the TIFF red carpet, landed a dream role as community reporter at video-game giant Ubisoft after winning a competition, and helped to handle public relations for the first Toronto Men’s Fashion Week, among other jobs.
Ghosh says that not only does a diverse career suit him, it’s also a necessity in modern media.
“It is fantastic to try everything, and to be in media in 2017, you have to be able to do a little bit of everything,” Ghosh said. “I do love trying a lot of things.”
Ghosh has been interested in the media since a very young age. Growing up in India, he was a rare grade-schooler who was as fascinated by the BBC World News as he was cartoons. He moved to Canada when he was around eight years old, and as he got older he only became more interested in media.
Since graduating, Ghosh’s portfolio has grown rapidly. He has created print or video content for companies including Enthusiast Gaming, the financial planning app Koind, the made-to-measure suit company Soren Custom Suits and Media Nexus’s GentsHQ vertical. In hindsight, he’s thankful that his Media Studies education at UofGH helped him round out his skillset enough that he was able to be so professionally flexible.
He’s eyeing post-graduate programs now, with a specific focus on working in film, television and media production. One idea he has is a “dynamic documentary,” where viewers can interact with and contribute to the material. Specifically, he wants to make a film about a topic close to his heart: mental health.
“I want to tell a story about mental health that doesn’t just show the grim side of it, but what people do to cope with it,” he said.
Ghosh’s goals have shifted a bit since he was one of the BBC’s youngest regular viewers. Still, he sees a strong connection between his journalistic ambitions and filmmaking.
“I do still want to pursue journalism, just in a different way,” he said. “I want to take the things I learned at Guelph-Humber and use them in my films.”
