The University of Guelph-Humber has already established its best-ever year of case competitions, with an exceptional 17 first-place finishes amounting to the most success the university has had.
Most recently, the UofGH team of Conor Kelly, Pankush Jhamat, Joy Uddin and Cristina Morrone finished in first place at Schulich’s DELTA: A Dynamic Consulting Challenge.
The challenging competition consisted of three rounds, each with a different style of competition: a case report submission; a three-hour timed case; and, finally, a one-week scenario presented to six Rogers employees. In the first round, more than 30 teams competed before the field was narrowed and the University of Guelph-Humber wound up on top.
UofGH students have also put in sparkling performances recently at the McMaster Fast Pace to the Case and DECA Waterloo, where University of Guelph-Humber students won 10 medals. Here are UofGH’s recent results:
- Emma Lal won first place in Fashion and Retail Management, followed by Cristina Morrone in second (DECA Waterloo)
- Bradley Hardeen and Amrit Chohan earned first place in Accounting (DECA Waterloo)
- Isabella Bevilacqua and Arshia Singh claimed first place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, followed by Gurbir Sandhu and Amrit Sidhu in second (DECA Waterloo)
- Joy Uddin finished in second place for Finance (DECA Waterloo)
- Conor Kelly and Pankush Jhamat placed second in International Business, with Tejpal Singh and Nikki Sandhu finishing third (DECA Waterloo)
- Tanvi Soi took third place in Marketing Management (DECA Waterloo)
- Alisha Sahota, Amanda Pleasance, Amandeep Singh and Ramanjit Saini received second place (McMaster’s Fast Pace to the Case Competition)
“This year, Guelph-Humber students have received an unprecedented number of Top 3 placements at external case competitions,” said Business Assistant Program Head Justin Medakiewicz, who collaborates closely with UofGH’s case competitors and plays a key role in helping them to prepare.
So far in 2016-17, UofGH has 30 total Top 3 placements including eight second-place finishes in addition to the 17 victories, a significant improvement from each of the previous two years when the University of Guelph-Humber pulled in 20 Top 3 placements.
At the McMaster competition, a team of four UofGH accounting students took home second place and a $2,000 cash prize.
Medakiewicz, who has seen UofGH’s case competition success multiply in recent years, says the phenomenal results can be credited to a number of factors.
“The results are a reflection of the academic and applied theory taught in the UofGH classroom, the support of DECA executives and mentors and, most importantly, the hard work and extra practice sessions completed by our students,” he said.
“We have a tremendous culture of case competition success at Guelph-Humber that seems to grow every year.”
