Past University of Guelph-Humber graduates recently gathered at Toronto’s trendy Gladstone Hotel to reconnect, network and reminisce on their memories of UofGH at the Alumni Reunion.
With delicious hors d’oeuvres circulating, alumni from all graduating years attended while those from the classes of 2012 and 2007 were the guests of honour in their fifth and 10th anniversaries respectively.
“Today is about you,” said Student Services Department Head Leah Murdock in her opening remarks. “It’s about what you do for the University of Guelph-Humber and what you’ve been doing since you graduated.
“As graduates of UofGH, you represent the best of what the university has to offer. In fact, much of what the greater public knows about the university is because of you. You’re our unofficial ambassadors. We owe our success as an institution to you. How successful you’ve been is in the numbers, and the numbers don’t lie: You’ve been very busy over the years.”
Valeria and Roger Scannura of Ritmo Flamenco provided a buoyant live dance performance and soundtrack to the evening, while professional photographer Melissa Aquino (Media Studies, Class of 2012) was on hand to snap an elegant new LinkedIn profile photo for anyone interested.
Awards were also handed out. The University of Guelph-Humber Alumni Award of Achievement went to Dr. Shane McIntosh (Computing Co-Op, Class of 2009), who is now Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University.
Prince Khan won the Distinguished Alumnus Award, which is given to a graduate for selflessly offering up his or her time to help the UofGH community. A graduate of the Business program in the class of 2015, Khan has volunteered hours and hours of his time to mentor UofGH students and guide them to DECA competition success.
“Thank you so much to Guelph-Humber for giving me the opportunity to get where I am today,” he said as he accepted his award. “Six or seven years ago I never would have imagined me being on this stage or at this level.
“It’s been a great ride and I’m going to continue to volunteer. I love what I’m doing and I love the school.”
