Celebrating Black Heritage Month at Guelph-Humber

We sat down with two fourth-year Justice Studies students who have been busy planning for this year’s Black Heritage Month.

Tenisha Noel and Priya Puran are both First Year Experience (FYE) Leaders and members of Alpha Phi Sigma, and Tenisha is also an outreach assistant with Black Student Support and Engagement (BSSE)

Speak Blac
January 31 I 3:00 PM-4:30 PM I North LRC2123
Speak BLAC is a workshop + open mic series for Black-identifying students to engage with the art of creative writing and performance. This event encourages students to exercise their writing and communication skills, while building confidence, accountability, and community.

Opening Ceremony
Feb 1st | 12 PM - 3 PM | Lakeshore lobby
Join us as we celebrate the rich history and culture of the Black community through various activities. These include exploring Black cuisine, appreciating Black art, supporting community businesses, and enjoying Black-inspired music. Let's come together and celebrate the many facets of Black culture.

Black Art Inspired: Clay Workshop

Unleash your creativity with our Clay Crafting Workshop! Join us for a hands-on experience where you'll mold and shape your imagination into unique clay creations. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, our expert instructors will guide you through the process, providing tips and tricks to bring your vision to life. Get ready to get your hands dirty, have fun, and take home your one-of-a-kind clay masterpiece!

Kinks, Coils & Confidence Hair Event

"Kinks, Coils & Confidence" is a workshop for students to connect with peers who share an interest in natural hair care. This event will offer a sense of belonging and understanding beyond just hairstyles. 

Alpha Phi Sigma’s Breaking Boundaries: Criminal Justice Reform Unplugged
February 13 I 11:00AM-1:30PM I Guelph-Humber Atrium 
Join us for a thought-provoking event that perfectly aligns with Alpha Phi Sigma's principles. Our initiative brings together criminal justice reform organizations to educate students on addressing black overrepresentation, promoting academic excellence through knowledge dissemination. This event goes beyond the classroom by fostering community engagement, echoing the values of community service and unity cherished by Alpha Phi Sigma. Additionally, we are featuring organizations dedicated to directly helping Black youth, contributing to our mission of educational leadership and raising awareness about critical issues in the criminal justice system. Be part of this impactful experience, where education meets community impact! 

Durags & Bonnets Games Night

Students can unwind and relax by participating in a themed games night. It's a chance to socialize with peers and immerse themselves in the comfort of Black culture, all while expressing their style through clothing.

Dominoes Day
Feb 15th | 1 PM - 3 PM | Lakeshore A168
Students are in for a treat with dominoes, one of the most beloved games in the Black African-American community. What's the goal? To bring everyone together through the power of play. Let the good times roll! 

BlaQ: Ballroom Dance Class
Feb 16th | 1 PM - 3 PM | Lakeshore A170
Join us for a Vogueing and Ballroom Choreography class. Learn iconic moves of Vogue and electrifying steps of ballroom dance in a supportive and inclusive environment. Space is limited. Secure your spot now for an afternoon of dance, style, and empowerment. 

Joll-off
Feb 20th | 12 PM - 2 PM | North LRC
The debate on who prepares the best Jollof rice, Ghana or Nigeria, will be settled at Humber College. Jollof rice is a popular West African dish that symbolizes cultural identity. The event celebrates Jollof rice's cultural significance and deliciousness. 

Movie Night - The Blackening
Feb 20th | 1 PM - 3 PM | Lakeshore A168
Come enjoy an evening of entertainment and community as we come together for a screening of the Blackening, we will also have snacks and refreshments to enjoy during the screening! 

Melanin Market
Feb 22nd | 1 PM - 3 PM | North LRC
Join us for an exciting cultural celebration and entrepreneurship event. Discover handmade goods from Black-owned businesses, try authentic African and Caribbean cuisine, and engage in fun activities while connecting with local artisans. Don't miss out on supporting and celebrating the creativity and innovation of Black entrepreneurs in our community.
