UofGH announces appointment of Program Head, Early Childhood

Dr. Nikki Martyn has been named Program Head of the University of Guelph-Humber’s Early Childhood program.

Vice-Provost, Dr. John Walsh, praised the appointment:  “Dr. Martyn brings an extensive background in both child psychology and early childhood education, with specific expertise in the growing area of infant mental health.  She is an outstanding example of someone who has applied her academic achievements to advance the field.”

As an infant mental health specialist at the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre in Toronto, Dr. Martyn conducted trainings in the areas of attachment, brain development, social-emotional development, and prevention and early intervention strategies.

She is the founder of the Mindwerx4Kids Learning Centre, a therapeutic school, where children are offered individualized learning programs based on regular psychoeducational assessments and academic evaluations.

As a researcher, Dr. Martyn specializes in issues affecting vulnerable populations, including children in need of psychiatric services.  Her research projects include work with Dr. Sarah Landy on her child development book series Pathways to Competence, and with Dr. Elsa Broder, most noted for her work in child psychiatry with The Hospital for Sick Children.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Martyn held the position of Assistant Program Head and Acting Program Head of UofGH’s Early Childhood program.  She also worked as a professor at York and Ryerson University.

Her appointment begins Jan. 1, 2015.
