Question
I graduated from high school a year ago, and I haven’t attended college or university. Am I at a disadvantage compared to students who applied straight from high school?

Answer No. The application form you will fill out through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre will be different (OUAC 105), but there is no advantage or disadvantage for students applying using different application forms. A student who has taken time off will be evaluated using the same academic criteria as students applying directly from high school, and you will be equally considered for the same scholarships, bursaries and residence as students applying directly from high school.

Question
Do you have any tips for the application process for students not applying directly from high school?

Answer Although the deadline to apply for our programs is May 1, we strongly recommend that you apply as early as possible. (Deadline to apply for Media Studies is February 1).

To facilitate potential credit assessment, applicants who have attended college and do not possess a high affinity diploma or university applicants are strongly encouraged to submit detailed course description from their post-secondary study. College and/or university applicants are encouraged to submit official transcripts from their college or university upon completion of their program of study.

We encourage applicants to complete the online Mature and Transfer Student Profile. The information provided on this form will allow the admission committee to consider more than academic performance. We are also interested in knowing about activities in which you have been involved that have contributed  to your personal development such as work, volunteer experience and community development.

Question
I've competed some post-secondary education. How will you consider my application?
Answer Anyone who has attended or is currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution (college or university) may apply for admission to the University of Guelph-Humber's programs. An applicant with this profile is considered a "transfer" applicant.

Due to the nature of the University of Guelph-Humber's programs and the limited number of electives in each program, students transferring should be aware  that it is rare to be able to enter into year three or four of any programs directly without having to complete some year one and two courses. This number of transfer credits granted is not automatic and will be assessed on an individual basis.

Answer Yes. At the University of Guelph-Humber, we recognize that non-academic factors play an important role in student life.

High School Applicants
The
Student Profile is your opportunity to tell the Admissions Committee about your extracurricular activities that demonstrate leadership qualities and personal development, such as part-time work, volunteering and community involvement. Factors beyond your control that have negatively affected your academic performance, such as illness or personal problems can also be stated in the Student Profile.

We encourage all high school applicants to complete the Student Profile as it will be considered when making admissions decisions if your average does not meet the  required admission average for the program to which you have applied or your admission average falls within the range of 70.0%-74.9%. Question
I’ve completed some post-secondary education. What kind of transfer credit can I receive?
Answer

If you have already earned the requirements for some of the course offered at the University of Guelph-Humber through previous post-secondary course work, we will consider you for potential advanced standing credit. This means that you will not be required to take certain courses for which you have advanced standing. The maximum amount of advanced standing credit that can be granted a student from another college and/or university to the University of Guelph-Humber is 10 credits (or the equivalent of two full-time years study).

Students receiving the maximum number of tranfer credits have typically either competed a university degree in a related field of study OR compeleted a significant amount of study ast the university level in a related field of study OR have graduated from a three-year college diploma in a related field of study in good academic standing (75% cumulative average or higher).

A two-year college diploma graduate from a related field of study in good academic standing (75% cumulative average or higher) can expect to receive a maximum of five transfer credits (equivalent to one year of study). The amount of credit granted will depend upon the specific courses that have been completed at the college level and the academic performance in those courses. The number of tranfser credits granted is not automatic and will be assessed on an individual basis.

Question
Can I find out what courses I am eligible to receive advanced standing in before I apply?
