One of the first decisions you will need to make is where you plan to live while you attend university. Whether you plan to live on campus or somewhere nearby, taking part in orientation and mentoring programs will help you connect to your new home away from home.
Living at Home Thinking of living at home next year? You're in good company! A recent federal government study found that 76% of Canada's post-secondary students under the age of 21 live at home during the school year. Saving money and limiting debt are among the main reasons students choose this option. If you are planning to live at home, be assured that our small, close knit community provides you with a range of opportunities to get involved and meet new people.
Living Off-Campus If you are looking for accommodations near campus, there are a wide variety of options from which to choose. Rooms, houses and apartments are available for rent within a few blocks of campus. The Off-Campus Housing Coordinator and Off-campus Housing website can help locate the type of housing best suited to your needs. These resources and our online message board can help you find a roommate and provide you with helpful hints to ease the transition to your new place.
The process of finding suitable accommodation can be made much easier by taking the following advice of experienced student 'home hunters'.
- Be organized.
- Start your search early! July is appropriate.
- Use Humber's Off-Campus Housing Registry.
The Off-Campus Housing Registry which is located off the lobby in Humber College's Residence has listings for self-contained flats, rooms, basements, apartments and houses for rent. These listings are available for viewing 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and can help familiarize you with your options. They can also assist you with such things as the location of the accommodation, transportation routes, rental costs, shopping areas and more. This will help you take some of the guesswork out of finding a place to live.
During the summer, students who would like to live in residence for a short period while looking for off-campus housing can contact the residence front desk at 416.675-6622 Ext. 77200.
